Mountain Training Centre, Solukhumbu
The establishment of a Mountain Training Center was envisioned in 2002 AD, and a suitable site was selected for the purpose in Garma Village of Solukhumbu district at the same time. Preliminary work to acquire 3000 ropanis of land for the project was begun immediately, but was abandoned because of political instability in the country. Now the present Committee, formed in 2006 after the restoration of democracy, has once again activated the project and begun work on it.
The proposed Mountain Training Centre will be located in Garma Village of Solukhumbu District. The village is at a distance of two hours' walk from the town of Salleri, the headquarters of Solukhumbu district. The Mountain Training Centre will occupy 3000 ropanis of land in ward nos. 1, 6 and 7 of Garma Village. Work on the project resumed by beginning to pay out a total of NRs. 5,000,000.00 through the District Administration Office to the local landowners as compensation for their lands.
The prime objective of Mountain Training Centre is to produce skilled manpower for the development of mountain tourism. As such, the Centre will develop into an important center for mountain tourism in the near future, and is expected to play a pivotal role in the development of central and southern regions of Solukhumbu District as tourist areas. The attraction and importance of the training centre will further increase with the construction of a road from Okhaldhunga to Solukhumbu. It will turn into a magnet for tourists landing at Bhugol and Phaplu airports as breathtaking sights of Numbur and other peaks can be seen from the site. The training centre will also act as a showcase for the culture, traditions, language, costumes, etc., of the various indigenous communities of the mountains
